The NordicTrack S45i (Model NTL99520) is an agile, space-saving folding treadmill powered by a 3.0 CHP motor and a smart 10" iFIT touchscreen. This motor translates the digital commands from your iFIT trainer into physical height changes, ranging smoothly from a 0% flat grade up to a 12% incline. Signs Your S45i Incline Motor Has Failed
Before replacing the motor, make sure your symptoms match these classic hardware failures:
The "Click and Quit": You press the incline button on the 10" screen; you hear a physical "click" from the motor hood area, but the deck stays flat.
The Screeching Bind: The treadmill attempts to adjust, but emits a loud, high-pitched screeching or grinding sound—a definitive sign that the internal plastic/metal gears are stripped.
Out-of-Calibration Freezing: The treadmill screen displays an elevation-related timeout error, or the iFIT app completely locks out speed adjustments because it cannot confirm the incline position.
The Critical DIY Rule: Master the Electronic "Zero"
Replacing the incline motor on an S45i takes about 30 to 45 minutes using standard garage tools. However, to avoid damaging your frame on the first test run, you must follow the Homing Rule:
The Calibration Secret: Never physically bolt a brand-new incline motor into the frame pins straight out of the box. First, plug the motor’s wire harness into the lower control board while the motor rests loosely on the floor. Turn on the treadmill and initiate the Console Calibration mode. This forces the control board to spin the new actuator shaft to its true digital "zero" or "home" position. Once the motor has electronically leveled itself, power down the machine, align the mounting holes with the frame brackets, and slide your structural cotter pins into place.
If you don't home it first, the motor may immediately attempt to drive the threaded shaft past its physical limitations upon startup, cracking the plastic mounting brackets or bending your steel frame lift arms.
